roses, puppets & cacti

oh did i have quite a busy saturday!  started gloomy and early with the bf's graduation from csula!  so happy he has finished!  it started raining during the graduation so we went home to take pictures and all that.

after the graduation the bf had to go to band practice so my mom and i went over the the huntington in pasadena to see the john frame exhibit and walk around the beautiful gardens.

after walking through the rose garden, herb garden we made our way to the john frame exhibit, three fragments of a lost tale.  the exhibit shows the puppet like sculptures and short film john frame made using the sculptures.  it was an incredibily interesting and the sculptures were so detailed for the small size.  i was eavesdropping a bit and heard one woman say it was not quite her taste, however i found it extremely interesting.  the tiny pieces that frame creates to form the sculptures are incredible and no detail is spared, even the fingers are moveable.  i would have loved to touch the pieces and see how each one moves.  photography wasn't allowed inside the gallery so i couldn't take any pictures.

we left the gallery and the sun had finally come out!  before we left we went to check out the desert garden, which i have to say is my favorite garden.  the colors and shapes are beautiful.

three fragments of a lost tale will be at the huntington until june 27th, and i highly recommend it.  for more information on the artist check out his website here and you can watch a little making of video below:

art in the streets @ the geffen contempoary at moca

thursday was my mom's birthday, and she wanted to go to the art in the streets exhibition at the geffen contemporary at moca, which was fine with me cause i'd heard really great things about it & wanted to go.

the geffen contempoary is free on thursday from 5-8pm.  we got to dtla around 515, however with all the traffic and searching for parking we didn't make it into the museum till around 6.  parking across the street from the musem was $6.50, not too bad however no one had cash and the lot looked filled already.  we drove a few blocks away and found free street parking!  it was a short walk to the museum, but i would definitely recommend parking away from the museum & walking - waaaaay less traffic which means way less stress.  unless you are one of those people that likes traffic (yeah right).

the amount of art in the museum is insane!  i've never been to such a big exhibition before.  seriously, the ENTIRE museum was taken over by street artists!  unfortunately it was really crowded, i think because it was free entry to the museum, but there was just so much to see so we could move to less crowded areas.  i definitely want to go back to the exhibit to see some of the things i missed, there was just so much you couldn't see it all in 2 hours.

art in the streets will be at the geffen contemporary at moca until august 8th, 2011.  check out the video below & for more information and videos on the exhibition check out moca's blog, the curve.

wine and art and flowers

my first full day in texas i woke up to cool weather and gloomy skies, but it didn't last long.  we started the day off at the anarte gallery to check out the current exhibit, GINORMOUS by franco mondini-ruzi

after a glass of wine, browsing the artwork, purchasing a original print and chatting with all the ladies, we were starving for lunch.  carolyn took us too la gloria at the pearl brewery.  i had grilled fish tacos which were delish.  if you happen to be dining at la gloria i definitely would recommend the grilled fish tacos (pescado zarandeado on the menu).  the location was perfect too, the restaurant was next to the river walk and the sun had come out and it was warm.  just right for eating outside.

once we had eaten it was time to run errands for the birthday party - flowers and groceries - which was a lot of fun actually!

trying to stay healthy (didn't last after the first day), anjelica and i made stir-fry for dinner.  we didn't use a recipe, just bought some veggies and tofu, chopped it up, threw it in the wok and a few minutes later had a yummy dinner.

ingredients:
1 red pepper
1 yellow pepper
1 package sliced mushrooms
1 yellow squash
1 chayote
1 package snap peas
1/2 cup chopped green onion (picked from carolyns yard)
3 cloves garlic
1 package firm tofu
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon sesame oil
add garlic, sauté for 1-2 mins.  add chopped veggies, cook till the chayote & squash have reached desired softness.  top with hoisin sauce & sriracha.

finally, here is what i wore on my first day in texas:

free people jacket, gifted c&c shirt, jbrand jeans, zara scarf, jeffrey campbell boots
