new fab find: hurley by pendleton

normally i wouldn't be interested in anything hurley, until i saw their pendleton collaboration collection. i LOVE pendleton, and will check out anything that is related to the brand. when i found out that the hurley pop up shop was opening at the americana and would be carrying the collection, obviously i had to make a trip.

they have men's, women's and accessories at the store, basically everything that is also on the site.

love the soft, fuzzy lining

of course i was more interested in the women's apparel than then men's but i do really like the fleece hoodie and the plaid shirts (although the price point is the same as the normal pendleton shirts). i decided to try on two items, the jeans and the cropped jacket.

while the jeans are really cute, i wasn't really happy with the fit. because of the wool panels on the back of the thigh there is no stretch at all, and the jeans were hard to get on even though the waist fit fine. also - i feel like this could be a relatively easy (and waaaay cheaper) DIY.

i love this jacket! it was comfortable, and def. feels like it will keep you warm. the body is lined with a really soft sherpa fabric. the actual color of the sherpa fabric is not as bright white as the images on the site. also, i'm a bit confused as to why its called a cropped jacket, the length didn't feel short or cropped at all. one nice feature is that the hood is removable, which i think is great. once you remove the hood i feel like the jacket can be dressed up a bit. i might just have to pick up the jacket for myself i love it so much.

fab finds at the gilt city warehouse sale

i went to the gilt city warehouse sale this past saturday, and while it was pretty overwhelming i did find some stuff i liked. and it was CHEAP!

i picked up a bracelet and a pair of earrings, both by dannijo (who i previous talked shit about, but at least my bracelet & earrings required some kind of creative design... i think).

only $10 for each item, so it was def. a steal! i didn't really see any shoes or apparel that i liked and i was a little disappointed with the home selection. the kids stuff was pretty cute though, i was sooo close to buying this little rag & bone chunky cardigan only i dont have a baby and all the babies/kids i know are too little or too big. anyway, def. a successful outing.

wear art on your sleeve

i made an amazing discovery this weekend while out to brunch on saturday in hollywood. FREECITY, one of my most favorite stores ever has moved out of their store in malibu to a larger, better location on highland in hollywood!

i am really really really excited about this new store location! as much as i love malibu, it is sooo far now that i don't live in woodland hills anymore. not only is the space larger, but they have so many new items that they are making, not just the t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants from before.

for those that don't already know about FREECITY, it was founded by nina garduno in 2001 and opened its malibu store in 2005. the brand is most known for its bold graphics (the dove and the hummingbird) and words of goodness (life nature love, artists wanted) hand printed on hoodies and sweats. all the items are made in-house at the FREECITY workshop, hand dyed and screen printed. they also make bikes, fragrances, jackets, pants, jewelry, and have a shoe line that is a collaboration with vans. check out an interview with nina garduno here.

i got my first hoodie shortly after the store opened in malibu and have expanded my collection since. i now own four hoodies (two pull-over, two zip) and two pairs of sweats. i really love everything about the brand, and i feel like i'm wearing art. i wasn't planning on buying anything, but decided to get a poster (below) for my house. it was only $12! i also found a jacket that i'm in love with, and it probably was a bad idea to try it on since it was over $600. but i cannot wait to go back to the shop!

kinda hillbilly

as usual i started my morning by checking the whats new page on shopbop, and stumbled across some new stuff that though i'm a little embarrassed to admit it, i looooovveee!

torn by ronny kobo
doesn't have a great website, and it looks like shopbop is one of the only websites carrying the entire for the mountain line. its a little trashy but but i think if styled right i could totally wear some of these tops.

the native american graphics totally remind me of the 90's and being in elementary school. i guess the 90's really are back, and i'm good with that - as long as wearing scrunchies as bracelets doesn't come back!

question.

do you count as a designer if you buy strands of beads from the flea market for $5 and then jack up the price to $50 and re-sell as you purchased the strands (on the same string)? just wondering if you can claim it as your creations.

"jewelry designer" vanessa mooney thinks yes. while searching shopbop today i came across a ring that i thought was not only pretty, but pretty over priced considering i could make the same thing for less than half the price:

sooo i decided to check out what other jewelry this girl "makes" and i quickly realized that shes not really making everything shes selling. one of her necklaces, the mixed metal african necklace, which is priced at $176 required almost no work on her part. i actually bought some of the beads that she is selling and i know the most expensive strand in the necklace is no more than $13. so i suppose that wholesale this necklace is around $50, but is it really fair to mark it up soo much for the retail price? i mean this girl probably spent about 1 minute putting these necklaces all together and maybe another shipping it out. she didn't even put a real clasp on the necklaces or transfer the beads on to a nicer string. shes just selling the beads as is!

in my opinion this is totally ridic!! i'm not even putting a link to the "designers" website. maybe i wouldn't be so annoyed if she put some actual creative thought into the jewelry and then charged over $100.

anyway, if you like the stuff, just go to the flea market yourself (remember, PCC is free to enter!) and save your self a bunch of cash.
