roses, puppets & cacti

oh did i have quite a busy saturday!  started gloomy and early with the bf's graduation from csula!  so happy he has finished!  it started raining during the graduation so we went home to take pictures and all that.

after the graduation the bf had to go to band practice so my mom and i went over the the huntington in pasadena to see the john frame exhibit and walk around the beautiful gardens.

after walking through the rose garden, herb garden we made our way to the john frame exhibit, three fragments of a lost tale.  the exhibit shows the puppet like sculptures and short film john frame made using the sculptures.  it was an incredibily interesting and the sculptures were so detailed for the small size.  i was eavesdropping a bit and heard one woman say it was not quite her taste, however i found it extremely interesting.  the tiny pieces that frame creates to form the sculptures are incredible and no detail is spared, even the fingers are moveable.  i would have loved to touch the pieces and see how each one moves.  photography wasn't allowed inside the gallery so i couldn't take any pictures.

we left the gallery and the sun had finally come out!  before we left we went to check out the desert garden, which i have to say is my favorite garden.  the colors and shapes are beautiful.

three fragments of a lost tale will be at the huntington until june 27th, and i highly recommend it.  for more information on the artist check out his website here and you can watch a little making of video below:

art in the streets @ the geffen contempoary at moca

thursday was my mom's birthday, and she wanted to go to the art in the streets exhibition at the geffen contemporary at moca, which was fine with me cause i'd heard really great things about it & wanted to go.

gap denim jacket, ella moss crochet tank, lululemon leggins, zara scarf, pendleton bag, tory burch flats, ray-ban glasses

the geffen contempoary is free on thursday from 5-8pm.  we got to dtla around 515, however with all the traffic and searching for parking we didn't make it into the museum till around 6.  parking across the street from the musem was $6.50, not too bad however no one had cash and the lot looked filled already.  we drove a few blocks away and found free street parking!  it was a short walk to the museum, but i would definitely recommend parking away from the museum & walking - waaaaay less traffic which means way less stress.  unless you are one of those people that likes traffic (yeah right).

the amount of art in the museum is insane!  i've never been to such a big exhibition before.  seriously, the ENTIRE museum was taken over by street artists!  unfortunately it was really crowded, i think because it was free entry to the museum, but there was just so much to see so we could move to less crowded areas.  i definitely want to go back to the exhibit to see some of the things i missed, there was just so much you couldn't see it all in 2 hours.

art in the streets will be at the geffen contemporary at moca until august 8th, 2011.  check out the video below & for more information and videos on the exhibition check out moca's blog, the curve.

fashioning fashion at LACMA

right now LACMA has a great exhibit focusing on european fashion from 1700-1915 at the resnick pavillion. fashion history was one of my favorite classes in school so my fellow stylists (fringe fries, behind the cocktail ring, plus one more who needs to get a blog!) and i planned a field trip to LACMA.

the exhibition, called fashioning fashion, covers everything from the changing silhouettes to the evolution of textiles to the changes in undergarments and accessories worn from the age of enlightenment to world war i.

i highly reccommend checking out the exhibit for anyone who is interested in fashion, textiles, art, or history. i definitely will be making a trip back before the exhibit ends, so i can spend more time looking at each piece. i took way more pictures than necessary, but have managed a few of my favorite pieces:

this dress is so light and airy, and when paired with the indian scarf is something even i would wear to the right event.

i love all the colors, textures and patterns found in this outfit. this would be worn by supporters of the french revolution.

i really love this walking stick - sooo harry potter!

this silk velvet robe is gorgeous. i need one for my closet.

i absolutely love everything about this outfit, down to the tassels on the harem pants. i could so live in these pants!

someone needs to bring this back so i could wear it without looking like a crazy palm reader.

lime green corduroy, sparkles and sequins. see detail below.

so amazing. all by hand.

i found the undergarments to be one of the most interesting parts of the exhibit. some of the undergarments that women wore in the past truly look like torture devices, and the weight that it added to every day dress must of been huge! i can barely wear an under wire bra, so i know i never would of lasted in a corset or cage crinoline.

okay.. this doesnt look too bad, just how exactly does one's waist get sooo tiny?? ouch!

the right goes under the left. was this really necessary? i have zero nostalgia for this.

and how do you sit with this? or was sitting down not lady like?

at least the bright colors make it look more fun...

again, the right under the left. who doesnt want an enormous ass?

on the bright side, you get a bit of cushioning. unless you are in the middle. yikes!

i really liked how the undergarment was displayed next to the actual garment worn on top. it really was like putting on one base outfit, and then the top coat. i was amazed at the lengths that women had to go to just to accentuate whatever body part was fashionable at the time.

fashioning fashion will be open until march 6, 2011. hurry up and go before its gone, this is something you don't want to miss!
